What Dog Food Should I Use For My Puppy Dog?

So, you are about to get a puppy or a new dog in your family, but how do you know which food your puppy should be eating? How the heck do you pick the correct food for your pooch? It all comes down to the ingredients of the dog/puppy food, the name of the brand really does not mean anything, just because you buy the most expensive brand does not mean that is the best choice food for your puppy.
How do I read the ingredients to choose the right dog food for my dog? So you see some dog food that is 10 dollars, then other bags that are the same size for 60 dollars, I should just buy the most expensive bag of dog food right, because it costs the most so it has to be the best right? Well, no – just the same the cheapest dog food is not always the worst, and sometimes not always a bad choice period. You go through the list of all the dog food brands, but I will not sit here and tell you “buy this brand, not this brand because this brand is good food and that brand is not”. That is not possible because companies are always changing the dog food they currently make and they are always coming out with new styles of dog food and calling them different things. So it is YOUR job to read the ingredients and figure out which food is best for your dog.
Choosing the correct dog food will not only help your puppy growing properly into an adult dog but will also help your adult dog live a longer, healthier life – all because you are choosing the correct dog food.
Corn is the main ingredients in much of the dog food there is out there, is that a bad thing? Yes and no – it depends how much corn is in the dog food, and how healthy your dog is. If you have a hunting dog that has to be in top shape and health, you probably are wanting something that will cost more made up of mostly meats with lots of protein. But your smaller dog, that is in the house 90% of the time, does not need as much protein and some other breeds.
You want to read the ingredients in the order that are listed on the back of the dog food bag, even if that means spending 20 minutes in the pet store or Walmart¬†reading the back of dog food bags, it will pay off in the long run and you will find out what works for you. Some dog food is also much to rich for certain dogs (typically smaller dogs) and will just cause issues like diarrhea. Typically the ingredients on the bag on dog food are listing in order from what your dog food contains the most of to what it contains the least of. If the bag of dog food starts off with corn, that usually means that dog food has more corn in it than anything else, not always bad, but sometimes it’s not the BEST for your dog. Now, if the dog food starts off with some meat or meat by-product, and the last thing on the list is beans, and the price seems pretty fair on that bag, then you have found your gold mine! That means your dog food contains MOSTLY meat and some of the least ingredients are vegetables, but also look at everything else in it as well.
Lots of dog foods will contain corn, artificial dye, flavorings etc, which is normally what you want to avoid, but you cannot always avoid it all, just try to get the dog food with the most things that YOU would put in your body, that makes it pretty simple!
As always, if you have any questions – give your local vet a call and see if they can give you any tips of brands they currently recommend in your area!
